ADA Compliance

All of our thresholds are designed to meet ADA requirements as long as they are installed properly and as directed.Marble thresholds are  to be recessed to the floor adjacent to it. Only  the bevel part to be raised off the floor, the bottom part to be recessed (please see drawings below ).

The ADA requirements for thresholds are:

  • Thresholds, if provided at a doorway, must not exceed 3/4 inch in height for exterior sliding doors or 1/2 inch for other types of doors.
  • Changes in level up to 1/4 inch can be vertical and do not need an edge treatment.
  • Changes in level between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch must have a beveled slope equaling 1:2

Our standard thicknesses for  4″ and wider thresholds are 5/8″, and 3/8″ or 1/2″ for 2″ wide thresholds.

Standard Bevel Thresholds have 1/4″ Bevels on 2 long sides and Hollywood thresholds are designed with large, ramp like  1 3/8″ Bevels.

Thresholds that are 5/8″ Thick on top level (4″ and wider thresholds), either a Standard Bevel Design or a Hollywood Bevel Design, after the bevel the thickness chamfers down to 3/8″ Thickness. The part that is raised off the floor is only 1/4″, and does comply with ADA.

Thresholds that are 1/2″ Thick on top level ( 2″ thresholds – only available in Standard Bevel Design ) , after the 1/4″ bevel, the thickness chamfers down to 1/4″ Thickness. The part that is raised off the floor is only 1/4″ , and does comply with ADA.

Thresholds that are 3/8″ Thick on top level ( 2″ thresholds – only available in Standard Bevel Design ) , after the 1/4″ bevel, the thickness chamfers down to 1/8″ Thickness. The part that is raised off the floor is only 1/4″ , and does comply with ADA.

Is your project specified with 3/4″ Thresholds and concerned our 5/8″ thick thresholds will not work?

Some projects are specified with 3/4″ thick marble thresholds by Architects. Architects assumes the threshold to be custom cut from slabs locally which are already 3/4″. Usually slimmer the better, however, if they were to specify 1/2″ or 5/8″, it would be impossible to make them locally. Our thresholds are made overseas and directly cut into the 5/8″  or 1/2″ thickness and works just fine within ADA regulations. If some more thickness is required for some special cases, this is also resolved by raising the threshold by adding more mortar bed. The problem usually is if a threshold is thicker than 3/4″ as ADA does not allow a threshold thicker than 3/4″. However anything less is never an issue and will be approved no problem.
